SWMC adopts St. Pauls Primary School in PET Bottle recycling program

The Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) continues to roll out its PET Bottles Recycling Program with schools across St. Kitts. On Monday June 18, two representatives of the SWMC presented two garbage bins to the St. Pauls Primary School, to be used for the sole purpose of disposing plastic bottles. The bottles will be collected each week by Admirals, the company that performs recycling services on St. Kitts. Collections Officer Tyasha Henry and Operations Manager Carol Henry visited the school on Monday where the bins were presented to Principal of the school John Gumbs. “It gives me great pleasure to partner with Solid Waste Management Corporation in helping to protect and preserve our environment in having two garbage bins placed at our school in which our students will be able to separate our garbage. Those that are biodegradable from those that are non-biodegradable,” Mr. Gumbs said.

“In this way we would be able to help to protect our environment and help preserve it and this is an opportunity for our children to take what they have learnt in the school environment and take it to St. Pauls and the island on a whole,” the school principal added.

Meanwhile, Ms. Henry said that the project involves six schools that the SWMC will adopt. “They will be separating the PET bottles, along with maybe cardboard and we will have Admirals on board, collecting the bottles at least once a week. This is a project we want to introduce in all the schools so that the schools and the children can adopt the (attitude) of separating garbage,” she said. The other five schools involved in this project are Beach Allen Primary School, Newtown Ground Primary School, the Basseterre High School, Saddlers Secondary School and the Sandy Point Primary School.
