Communities within the range of Ottley’s to Harris’ have been chosen for this weekend’s edition of the SWMC National Clean Up Campaign. Bins will be placed in several locations from this Friday September 28, 2018 and picked up on Monday October 1. The big blue bins will be for the collection of white goods which are old appliances, metals and old car parts while the green bins will be for the collection of bulky waste. Operations Manager of the SWMC Mr. Keithley Phillip, speaking on WINN FM’s Talking Trash on Tuesday gave details of the collection drive this weekend. “We will be placing the bins in various parts of those communities. We will be placing in excess of 12 bins,” he explained. “We will be placing two different types of bins. There will be the green bins and there will be the blue bins. The blue bins will have a sticker saying appliances only. By appliance we mean refrigerator, stoves, washing machines, TVs, microwaves; things of that nature,” he explained. As for the green bins, Mr. Phillip pointed out that these items are not for the disposal of regular household waste, as these will be collected during the regular pick up schedule, but rather for bulky waste. “For this specific initiative, we want you bring out all your bulky waste. Things that we do not normally pick up. These are the items that cluster your yard and your homes. These are the items we want you to dispose,” he explained.

He especially called on persons in Molineux to work collectively for the collection of especially white goods in that community. “We understand that in Molineux, there are a number of waste items, old refrigerators etc. that borders the cane field, in ghauts and so on. We are hoping that there are community minded persons, that may form groups and bring these items and deposit them in these bins,” Mr. Phillip said.

The National Clean Up Campaign continues well beyond this weekend in other communities, as explained by SWMC Public Relations and Conference Facilities Coordinator Namayombo Mgonela. These include:

  • Village to West Farm and Newton Ground to Saddlers: October 5th to 8th
  • Cayon to Kit Stoddart to St. Peters: October 12th to 15th
  • Challengers to Half Way Tree and Frigate Bay to Independence Square October 19th to 22nd

Meanwhile, Ms. Mgonela made a special appeal for persons to have the garbage and items for disposal to be thrown in the bins and not next to the bins. “Take you white goods to the bins. We are unable to place bins in front of every single house and so we asking you to please cooperate with us as we attempt to clean up our country,” she said.

The SWMC National Clean Up Campaign is an initiative of the corporation and will involve several communities over an eight week period. The SWMC is working along with D and D Waste Services that is placing large blue bins that will be used for the collection of white goods.
