SWMC wants advance notice about new housing developments

A waste management official is calling for the authorities to inform them in advance whenever new housing developments are being commissioned so that a proper solid waste disposal plan can be factored in for these new communities. That call is coming from Operation Supervisor Mr. Wilmon McCall. He said too often new housing developments are built and commissioned without the Solid Waste Management Corporation being informed.

As such, when people move into these houses, their waste are not being collected. “It’s better now than it was before, but it could even be better,” Mr. McCall said. He suggested that the SWMC would like to meet with these new residents before they move in to guide them as to when their waste would be collected.

Mr. McCall gave an example of a new housing scheme that did not have garbage collected for quite some time because the SWMC was unaware the community existed. “Only when the garbage began to surface then we realized that something was wrong…because we didn’t know that they were there,” Mr. McCall said. He explained that some litter wardens, within short order, would be sent to the Ottley’s area where a new housing development is being constructed and where persons are expected to move in soon. The SWMC official noted that while it is difficult to get all the residents in one place to have a meeting about waste disposal, litter wardens will in the meantime meet individually with persons in this new community.

Meanwhile, there are some changes for residents of Challengers. Normally, they would have two communal bins to collect their garbage. This has now been reduced to one bin. “There are two bins now. There will simply be one and we want the entire citizenry to know,” Mr. McCall said. He also suggested that on a Tuesday morning, persons can take their garbage to the bin and have it collected to make it easier for them to transport their waste.
