Phillip Urges Residents To Take Advantage Of Derelict Vehicles, White Goods Amnesty

General Manager of the St. Kitts Solid Waste Management Corporation Mr. Keithly Phillip, is urging residents to take advantage of the amnesty for the disposal of derelict vehicles and white goods. Since October 1st until the end of December 2018, the SWMC, through this amnesty, will allow for the disposal of derelict vehicles at the landfill without charging for the service. Persons are responsible for the picking up and transporting of these derelict vehicles to the landfill for disposal, as this service will not be provided by the SWMC under the amnesty. “The Solid Waste Management Corporation has declared an amnesty on all derelict vehicles that are brought to the landfill. By that I mean, if there is an old vehicle that you may have and it’s of no use to you, you can bring it to the Solid Waste landfill and we will accept that vehicle free of cost,” Mr. Phillip said.

Mr. Phillip in an interview recently also disclosed that white goods, which are old appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators, are also included in the amnesty, but again, persons are required to transport these items to the landfill. “If…you have at your home an old refrigerator, an old deep freezer, microwave, whatever it may be, if you have the wherewithal to bring it to the landfill, I am asking you to do so as this will be accepted between the 1st of October and the 31st of December free of charge,” he added. After this date, the corporation will charge for the disposal of white goods and derelict vehicles at the landfill.

The SWMC General Manager disclosed that come January, the corporation, like its counterpart in Nevis in collaboration with a company from the US, will be pursuing a project for the removal of scrap metal on the island. The Minister responsible for the SWMC Mr. Eugene Hamilton in October announced the amnesty and urged residents to take full advantage of the opportunity.
