Sanitation workers including employees of the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) will this Sunday be honored for their sterling work in keeping the island clean. The 14th annual Sanitary Workers Appreciation Service, will be held at the Apostolic Faith Mission Church on St. Johnston Ave this Sunday at 10am. Pastor Lincoln Hazel stressed that this service is very important to sanitary workers, because it shows recognition for their work in the community. “Sanitation workers are not normally recognized (because) they are at the bottom of the scale; bottom of the ladder and this is a time when you pay special recognition to these people, thanking them for their hard work,” Pastor Hazel said. “Many people say they get paid for it but I can tell you can never pay a sanitation worker for the work they do and we should say thanks.”
Meanwhile, Pastor Hazel disclosed that as customary, a few of the most outstanding workers will be honored for their contribution. “We also will be having a program for the sanitation workers where they will receive commendations and gifts, prizes for those who have been excellent in their work for the year,” Pastor Hazel said.
However, the pastor was keen to point out that there are gifts for every sanitation worker in attendance, but those who do not attend will not receive gifts. “We’re encouraging the team of sanitation workers to attend. But those who do not attend, we will not give a gift so it’s not we are going to send (a gift) for those who did not show up to the service,” Pastor Hazel explained. After the service on Sunday, the workers will be treated to lunch at 12 noon, which Pastor Hazel said is usually the hallmark of the day.
